The RIAA awards platinum certifications for U.S. shipments of 1,000,000 units.
The RIAA awards gold certifications for U.S. shipments of 500,000 units.

Here's the math:

So as you can see, for the Aerosmith's Greatest Hits album, 11,000,000 copies have been sold as reported by the RIAA. With today's CD ripping robotics it would take 88,000,000 minutes to rip all the copies sold!
